Be Still

It's hard to be still. Life is so full of things to do, places to go and people to meet. Why should we be still? It's like asking a child with ADD to sit quietly through a symphony.


If we haven't learned how to be still, we don't know what we're missing. Periodic times of disengagement restore creativity, freshness and balance. We can't run at full throttle all the time and still hope to remain vibrant and perceptive. Eventually our energies wane and our thinking becomes shallow. Without stillness we run the risk of spreading ourselves a half inch deep and a hundred miles wide.


God says, "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). As we reflect on God's presence, creativity and power, we are transformed and renewed.


Learning to be still involves silence, something many today are afriad of. Just like exercise, nurturing silence is a discipline that requires commitment. When you first seek it, you may feel awkward or silly. But don't give up! If you're not able to sense God's presence, your mind may still be too cluttered. Or, God may be withholding such a revelation to fine-tune your perceptions. Maybe He is stretching your faith muscles.


Prescription: Give God a chance to break through your sound barrier. Turn off all external noise for 15 minutes and sit quietly. If it's a nice day try doing this outside, but watch out for distractions. Invite God to join you for a soothing symphony of silence. Be prepared for an adventure!
