Instructions: Read a Bible text and focus on a particular word within the verse. Make this the focus of your thoughts and prayer. Here's an example to help you get started.
Bible Text: Psalm 37:7
"Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him." --Psalm 37:7 (NKJV).
Focus Word: Rest
Definitions: (Look up rest in a dictionary)
Rest "1. a bodily state characterized by minimal functional and metabolic activities. 2. a: freedom from activity or labor. b: a state of motionlessness or inactivity. c: the repose of death. 3. a place for resting or lodging. 4. peace of mind or spirit." ---Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.
Quick Response: (Write a few sentences that describe your immediate response to your word).
Rest sounds so good after a particularly exhausting experience. Twelve years ago when I moved from Colorado to California I drove straight through the night and became very tired. Finally, as I pulled into a rest stop, I could hardly wait to close my eyes and sleep. I was so tired! The only thing worse is spiritual exhaustion!
Second Thoughts: (Write some follow-up thoughts that are a little more seasoned and reflective).
Evidently, rest is as essential to our well-being as activity. Athletes in training know they will never reach their goal of optimum performance if they don't include regular intervals of rest after each workout. And yet, many will tell you this is the hardest part of their regimen.
"Dear God, I praise you for physical renewal. After the ups and downs of work and trying to survive, I’m glad to be able to go home and relax. Being with family and friends, eating good food and resting recharges my soul. Freedom from frantic deadlines and meaningless noise restores my energy. Being able to read Your Words and meditate on Your promises makes me hungry for more.
"Thank you for the promise of a future time when rest will be the norm throughout eternity. Give me patience to wait for the day when this will be a reality.
"Today, use me as a "rest stop" for some weary traveler. Use my words to bring comfort, hope and peace. Amen."
