A New Age is Coming
The global financial crisis — the worst since the Great Depression of the 1930s — reminds us that we live in a fragile, interdependent global village. President Obama, in his inaugural speech, said, “That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood.

Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.” What certainty does the Bible give about a new age?

1. What sure promise did Jesus make? John 14:1–3

“ ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. . . . I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.’ ”

2. What will be the last sign before the beginning of the new age? Matthew 24:14

“ ‘And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.’”

The good news is that the kingdom Jesus set up, which today we anticipate by faith, will become a reality when He comes the second time.

What will Happen?

3. When Jesus comes, what will happen to His true followers, living and dead? 1 Thessalonians 4:16–18; 1 Corinthians 15:51–53

“The dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive . . . will be caught up . . . to meet the Lord in the air.” “We will all be changed. . . . For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.”

4. What did Jesus say will happen to those who reject His gift of salvation? Luke 17:26–30

“ ‘Just as it was in the days of Noah . . . the flood came and destroyed them all. . . . [So] it will be . . . on the day the Son of Man is revealed’ ” (see also Matthew 13:36–43; 24:36–39; 1 Thessalonians 5:1–3; 2 Thessalonians 1:8–10).

Be Ready

5. Can we know exactly when Jesus will return? Matthew 24:36

“ ‘No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father’ ” (see also Acts 1:6, 7).

6. In view of this fact, what does Jesus say to us? Matthew 24:44

“ ‘So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.’ ”

7. How can we be ready for Jesus to come? John 5:24

“ ‘I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.’ ”

8. What warning did Jesus give about those who cry “wolf” before His second coming? Matthew 24:24

“ ‘For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect — if that were possible.’ ” Jesus’ coming will not be secret! It will be visible, audible, glorious, and personal, worldwide (Matthew 24:26, 27, 30, 31, 36–44; 25:31; Acts 1:11; Revelation 1:7).

9. What kind of a world will Jesus set up? Revelation 21:3, 4

“ ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ ”

God promises to “meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). Christian writer and Bible commentator Ellen G. White has said, “It is only because of His death that we can look with joy to His second coming. His sacrifice is the center of our hope. Upon this we must fix our faith” (The Desire of Ages, 660).
